Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our xylophone and recorder ensemble is a brand new group that I started. We meet after school and all interested students are invited; no audition is required. The students have shown remarkable interest and we need more xylophones to keep up with the enrollment.
Our school is high poverty and we are an isolated community in rural New Mexico.
All students receive free breakfast, lunch and a snack. The after school program provides important enrichment activities which would not otherwise be available. The students have taken to music with remarkable interest and ability. Their concerts have been exemplary and lauded by the community. We have been broadcast on the local radio station and been recorded by a local musician. Our goal is to be chosen as the state elementary honor group. It would be a thrill for us to perform for the New Mexico Music Educators' Association convention.
My Project
We recently received a grant to have a composer in Arizona write a piece of music for us. We are working hard to present a concert in April premiering the new work. With the new xylophone we will be able to have more students play, add to the sound of the group and be a more versatile group of musicians.
In the classroom, the soprano xylophone plays the melody.
I firmly believe in offering children multiple means of expression. The voice is not the preferred instrument for every child. In addition, I love to use xylophones because they stimulate the tactile kinesthetic learner.
