Help Wanted: One iMac to boost student filmmaking & learning

My students need a 21.5 iMac with iMovie and a fast processor to download and edit videos in class and after school during our Video Production Club work sessions.

This project expired on April 1, 2012.

My Students

How do you make subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators and regrouping engaging? How do you make a 5,000 year old civilization like Sumeria relevant today? How to tackle bullying and generate awareness about it at our school? By getting creative and tapping the technology of film making!

The students in my class are a California collage: White, Black, Asian, Latino, Middle Eastern, GATE, Special Education, at risk, proficient, advanced, basic, below basic.

But there are two things they all have in common: they love learning, and they love technology. Our suburban school is almost 20 years old. We are a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School. As our neighborhood changes, so do our demographics. In our school we are successfully tackling an increasing "achievement gap" by differentiating instruction for each child as needed. It takes work, but the results are worth it. Kids who come to our school for two years see a marked improvement in their standardized test scores and letter grades! Well-designed lessons, quality instructional materials, experienced teachers are all important, but kids have to be actively engaged in what they're learning. And they need ample opportunities to interact with what they're learning in creative, meaningful ways.

My Project

Daily my students are shouting out, "Mr. B! We should make this into a film!" So far, they've turned math into a media event. They've taken cyber-bullying and turned it into a tangible concept. How do 21st century students learn? By getting engaged and creative, by being challenged to do something more than just reading and writing about a subject. My students know if they can can summarize what they've learned in writing, it only takes a few more steps to brainstorm the images and scenes necessary to adapt a concept for the screen. We will soon begin production on two documentary films. The first will look at how a local non-profit organization provides therapeutic horseback riding for children with disabilities. The second will be a history of the U.S. Railway Mail Service with students interviewing a former railway postal employee.

My students are teeming with ideas they want to express to a wider audience outside our classroom: how to prevent pollution, save energy, take a complex math problem and break it down into manageable pieces, the meanings of idioms in our language, book reviews, public service announcements promoting character education, the list is endless.

Filmmaking is more than a teaching strategy, it's a way to empower students, to give them a voice, to help them realize that they can change the world!
