Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Did you ever play "school" or "store" as a kid? These students have never really had that opportunity and I would like to "cash in" on that excitement!
My students are excited third graders that don't have a lot of opportunities outside of school.
Our campus has the highest rate of poverty in the city. These are children who struggle with counting money and understanding the need to save money. They don't have much experience with real money and I want them to be have some exposure to responsible spending.
My Project
I am requesting a real cash register, play money and coins, and items for the students to purchase with their earned money. My students will earn money through jobs in our classroom. Then, they will be able to go to the "store" of items to purchase. Most items will be priced quite high so that I can teach them the value of saving up for something that they really want. I am hoping to teach students to count money, make change, saving and budgeting money.
It is important for students to learn how to count money and how to make change.
It is also imperative that we teach them how to earn it, pay bills, save up and not be frivolous with money.
