About My Students

Students at our school come from a wide variety of economic backgrounds. It usually comes down to the classroom community and the students and parents to make sure everyone has what they need to be successful. Donorschoose is a great way for our community to help us achieve this goal by donating money in ways they see fit benefit our classroom and the students that learn in it everyday. Many of our students do not have the same materials as students who come from school just down the street. Please help us purchase materials that will give our students the quality learning environment they deserve.

In my 8th grade general chorus class I try a lot of different activities to inspire students to learn through music. Everyone in the department learns a piece called "One Day" by Matisyahu and we hope to be able to inspire the kids to tell the story of our school through the use of this song. We want to record the song using digital acoustic electric guitars and then tell the story of the arts at Brogden with each class participating in it's own way (instrumental, choral and visual). We want to tell the story of how arts are under attack and how we value them and how our education would not be the same without the arts. We hope this story telling technique can be used by other schools to save and support the arts across the nation.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to support the arts with our story. We wouldn't want to lose our arts classes because they enrich our academic life and we couldn't imagine going to school and only having core 1, core 2 and core 3. We think the arts are also part of our "core" curriculum and we want to tell the story and share our story which we think is the story of many.

Our class is made up of musicians and non musicians. It is difficult for all of us to sing during class, but we've all found joy in learning to play the guitar. We don't have a class set, so we have to take turns and only have about 10-20 minutes to use the guitars. We hope this grant will help us afford the instruments we need for everyone to be able to play at the same time and then we can run sectionals in the hallway with student leaders.

Also, when telling the story of our arts department, we will be leaders by gathering stories all of the students and compiling them into this big story telling digital monstrosity that we will present to our parents and the school community.

This project is important because it will broaden the variety of things we learn in our classroom. Usually general chorus is about singing, music theory and vocal anatomy, but with these instruments we can take it to a new level and create a digital story using our musical and writing skills to create a digital story that we hope to share with our school and local community. We hope this project will be able to be replicated throughout the country to save arts programs and show that music can be more than what people think it is.
