Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sweet, sweet students love to write! They love to play pretend and they love to learn.
My school has over twenty-five countries represented in it.
My school is also a Title I school and 47% of our population is English Language Learners. My students live in neighborhoods where poverty and crime are the norm. My students face numerous struggles each day. They come from families that are not always able to provide supplies or academic assistance.
Given all of the challenges my students face each day, my hardworking second grade class comes to school every day with a smile on their faces and love of learning in their hearts. It is very simple; my students love school. School is their safe place. It is more than just the place where they come to learn. It is the place where they are loved! In many ways, my students are typical second graders. They are full of wonder, joy, and laughter. They love books, puzzles, and markers. Life is not always easy for these kiddos, but they have learned that hard work and perseverance pays off. It is an honor to be their teacher.
My Project
My students do not really understand how a story works. Reader's workshop is a time of the day where I can teach them. During this time I will use books to teach my students the skills to help them grow as readers. Most of my students read at a Pre-K level and they need all the resources and skill they get so they can get on grade level. They are willing to the work.
The problem is I need to books to teach my students the skills they need to understand stories.
I will use these books to model what a good reader does when reading. I will model making connections to stories, retelling stories, analyzing characters, and finding the main idea. I will model with students how to write about the books they are reading & how this will improve their reading. I also want to share my own love of reading & hopefully this will plant the seed of love reading for them as well.
