"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." (Dr. Seuss)
I want to increase my students' early literacy skills so that they can go many places!
I teach children with special needs in a Kindergarten Special Day Class in a school where 100% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
My students' qualifying conditions range from Autism to Mental Retardation to ADHD and Speech/Language Disorders. Many of my students have emerging speech, some do not talk, and I have one or two who can speak in 2-5 word phrases or simple sentences. Our entire class receives speech services, and our classroom is by nature a language-rich environment where we utilize multiple approaches to language development.
While my students may have learning handicaps, they still have a desire to learn that is inherent in young children, and they just need the right tools to help them be successful. I have found that providing my students with high-interest, hands-on activities increases their learning.
My Project
My students enjoy working with manipulatives, and learn best when they are able to interact with their learning materials. The Magnetic Alphabet Fishing Set and Alphabet Pegboards are sure to be popular with our students and promote learning, as we have seen growth with our students using similar number learning activities. The Opposites Audio Cards will be a language enhancing addition to our Audio Card Reader language learning system. The Mystery Box and Language Guessing Game is another language learning tool where students reach into a box to feel, identify, and learn the words for items.
All kids deserve the chance to learn to read and develop language at a young age!
Students with language and cognitive disabilities often fall behind in literacy skills. Learning to read opens so many doors for children, empowers them to further their learning, and gives them a sense of independence and confidence as well. Please help me make learning to read and language development a reality for my students this year!
