Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the very fortunate ability to teach middle school social studies in a very low-income, poverty-stricken, minority school in an urban district. I love teaching middle school students the historically important events of our past and also providing them the necessary social skills needed to create an overall better school-community environment. Many students in my school are economically disadvantaged, have a vast array of social and emotional issues, speak many different languages, have very limited formal schooling in their own languages, or have no real social guidance in which to model from home.
This does not mean that they are not motivated, innovative, and committed to getting the best out of their education!
My time deployed overseas as a United States Marine revealed to me that some form of education should be a basic human right. We want to school to be welcoming and safe. My students show resilience daily, and we should want to encourage that resiliency in our youth!
My Project
Help us with updating our technology! These supplies will assist our students with overcoming daily inconveniences that hinder excellent learning. Translations, missing assignments due to absences, and clear audio will all be provided with ease because of these materials! Updated school technology is a necessity for students to thrive throughout the school year! While my school does a lot to enable our students to use their vibrant and creative minds, the school's Title I status makes good quality classroom technology a scarce commodity. On top of this, the district even goes to the extreme of having the school ration the amount of printer paper given to educators for the school year.
Great quality classroom technology and learning tools are essential in developing the learning and thinking of our students!
A classroom printer will allow me to produce on-the-spot translation sheets, missing assignments due to absences or migrant students who join us later in the year and the convenience of printing assignments for my students who have no access to a printer. While the school does have a printer for us educators to utilize; they consist of (1) printer for up to 16 classrooms! This makes printing-on-the-spot assistance for my students a difficult task. Along with a printer, a classroom speaker provides better audio for my students when watching educational videos, when a student wants to share a media clip with class, and for those who have hearing disabilities. Sometimes it is very difficult to hear some of the educational media in my classroom due to its size and quality of existing technology. A speaker will assist in curbing this daily inconvenience.
