Help me give my students the needed resources to start our book club!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As the school librarian, I service every student in the building. While many students only come to the library when they are forced, there is one group of young ladies who couldn't wait to check out books this year. This group of girls is special, because they are all eager to learn and experience life through reading. They seek out books to read on their own and they often times come to me to help guide them to other books that may peak their interests.
Leisure reading is a critical part of the learning process and I am so excited to have a group of girls who have an interest, eagerness, and thirst to read.
On the first day of school, they asked when they could check out books. I love when they come to the library. They push me to be a better librarian and secure the resources they request. Some of them are serious and specific in their reading while others come in smiling, laughing, and with an "idea" that requires my help. They make my job fun, so I want to show them more ways reading can be fun through our book club.
The copies of The Hate U Give will give me the ability to start the much desired book club that has been requested by my students. A group of girls at my school has expressed a sincere interest in leisure reading and specifically, in this book. This book would provide the materials to get our book club started. Each of these young ladies is unique and frequents the library, but I have yet to have the resources to allow all of them to read the same book.
By supporting this project, you will support literacy and reading in an underperforming school.
Each of these young ladies has room for growth in their reading scores as well as on the ACT reading test. By reading more, they improve their vocabulary and reading fluency. Reading this book together will give them more of an opportunity to dig deeper into a popular novel. By allowing us to engage in this book together, I can push these young ladies beyond their comfort zone with their reading and they can actively engage in a book of their interest.
