Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a public charter school that is home to a diverse population of students who predominantly come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our institution has qualified for Title I designation since its inception in 2009, with 86% of the student population eligible for free or reduced meals.

Low-income communities, like the one surrounding our institution, often lack easily accessible full-service grocery stores and farmers’ markets where residents can buy high-quality produce and other healthy food products.

Low-income communities tend to have greater availability of fast food restaurants, especially near schools (there are 15 fast-food restaurants within 2 miles of the school). Studies have shown the rates of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart attacks to be higher in low-income communities.

Furthermore, Homestead, Florida has lost 45% of its cropland due to urban development in the last two decades, which has also negatively impacted the availability of locally-grown fresh produce in the community.

Our students have shown a vested interest in gardening and agriculture, as well as technology. Thus, we have decided to start an AgTech program which will empower our students to use STEM-oriented concepts to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables to the surrounding community.

My Project

The goal at is to create an Agriculture Technology program where students will develop a computer-controlled aeroponic growing system that is both sustainable and affordable to operate.

We will utilize principles from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to provide the ideal growing conditions for fruits and vegetables.

We will lean on the computer sciences to control and automate all processes. Engineering concepts will be used to design an effective system that maximizes efficiency, affordability, and sustainability. In the short term, we will use the system to increase the availability of high-quality fresh produce and improve the overall health and eating habits of our community. With the human population projected to be 11 Billion by 2050, our long-term vision is to develop a viable solution for feeding the world's growing population. As worldwide agricultural productivity will need to increase by 70%, we believe this program will empower our students to help solve these issues.
