My Students

My students love to ask questions in science class about the world around them. They are keen observers who often notice and describe natural phenomena in ways that expand their classmates' thinking and my own thinking as their science teacher. They are ready to learn and enthusiastic about gaining new knowledge and applying what they already know to learn even more. My students are especially engaged in learning when conducting scientific investigations that involve hands-on activities and provide opportunities for student-led decision-making and choice.

My Project

The tree identification field guides will serve as reference materials for students to go into our school neighborhood in NYC during their lunch period to identify and map the trees that line street sidewalks and those that are located in nearby parks. After receiving training on how to use these field guides, students will be able to check them out from our science library during lunch and independently explore the neighborhood to identify trees. As we live in an urban setting, practicing tree identification will help students gain new perspectives and broaden their thinking about the connections between the natural world and cities.
