I teach first grade students who attend a Title 1 school in a high-need community of Seattle, WA.
The students in my literacy group are struggling with reading. We are learning sight words and phonics. The students would really benefit from your help.
Why Picture Dictionaries?
I have many second language learners in my classroom. These picture dictionaries will provide my students with the word linked to an image. These dictionaries will last a long time and provide clear and precise pages, with concise and rigorous texts, multilingual, the dictionaries will become an academic resource. They are different from an encyclopedia or from a traditional online dictionaries, thesauri and glossaries because the images are right along side the words.
In addition, these dictionaries contain sharp, brightly hued photos that effectively leap off the page combine with detailed drawings to make this large-format, paper-over-board volume a visual treat for youngsters. Preschoolers can keep busy identifying the two dozen or so objects, concepts and actions illustrated on each spread. Older readers can tackle the concise definitions accompanying each bold-faced word and picture. Root emphasizes familiar and more exotic animals, as well as activities, playthings and locations (supermarket, school, park) that are pivotal to a child's world. She does an admirable job using words and pictures to present tough-to-describe adjectives (double, expensive).
The author also includes entries and photos representing numerous cultures, and writes her definitions from a child's perspective without being at all condescending ("A man is a grown-up boy"). A welcome addition to this well-balanced reference is a concluding section devoted to "dictionary games" that challenge memory, spelling and deduction skills.
Your help will stimulate learning through seeing, hearing, and doing. It will also reinforce skill themes, allow us to be a literacy model, and add more fun to our program!
