This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Wouldn't it be great to be in a classroom where access to current resources and technology were readily available, a classroom where students could research and participate in interactive learning activities that correspond to their units of study? Having a laptop computer would make that possible.
There are about 700 students at my K-5 elementary school in South Gate.
The majority of the children are Hispanic and English Language Learners. The children come from low income families that are struggling financially. Most of the children qualify for free or reduced lunch. In my second grade class, I have a diverse group of children. Some of my students have special needs, others are being raised by relatives. A majority of students come from one parent families, who work late hours and have little time to spend with their children.
My Project
I don't have enough computers for my students. To increase student achievement our school has purchased various on-line computer programs in the areas of reading, math and social studies. Our new reading series provides on-line reading activities, testing and researching. Accelerated reading, a supplemental reading program, encourages children to read books and then on the computer they take comprehension tests. They acquire points towards certificates. I have seen my students blossom into readers just by using this program! Our math series and remedial math program have on-line games, activities, and reteaching lessons which have significantly increased students' skills. The majority of my students do not have computers at home to use these programs and some of these programs can only be accessed at school. In the classroom I have a limited amount of computers. My 25 students have a short amount of time if any on a computer, or must wait for an available computer.
Please help us get one laptop computer!
My students need a computer that they can use for projects, lessons and various learning activities. The students are ready, willing, and able to learn, they just need the tool that will help them: a laptop computer!
