Help Us Soar - A Project About Eagles and Writing!
My students need transportation to a field trip to CuriOdyssey! Our field trip has already been funded, as has a published, nonfiction book that students made to donate to CuriOdyssey, honoring their rescued golden eagle pair!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This class has decided to meet my start-of-year challenge: to make the school year great. We started by talking about what greatness is, and how it can be a synonym for both good and "more than usual." We talked about how four-fifths of our class was below (and many "far below") expected reading skills. We discussed how even fewer students were meeting math goals. We talked about these facts as challenges, instead of faults.
Then we decided to become engineers and build a community for "tough learning." We made a pledge to help ourselves and each other, and to problem-solve when we couldn't do both at the same time.
Then we started learning how to learn better so that we can catch up, keep going, and still have fun along the way.
We still have a long way to go on our path to greatness. But we've made some amazing strides. Several of our students have "caught up" on reading and math. The students have even impressed me (their doctoral-level teacher!) with their newfound dedication to technology, and to using basic game theory as part of their problem-solving repertoire. I am excited to continue supporting and teaching them!
My Project
We wrote a book! It's a nonfiction book that we researched ourselves, from learning how to use computers and search the internet safely, to fundraising the publication of the book through Student Treasures Publishing (via our very own lemonade stand!). This project has been a Project-Based Learning activity, and we need your help to finish it by connecting it to our community.
The project started as a student-planned activity to support one of our highest-need students in reading (a future pilot who may also become an ornithologist and LOVES everything about eagles).
Students have taken their own leadership in planning this project, down to finding a location with real, live rescue eagles to serve as mascots for their work. Our students would like to donate their work to CuriOdyssey in person, as well as learn more about predators and ecosystems through a field trip program (which is already funded for us!).
