Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a charter school in Sacramento where many of the students served are from low income families and come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Due to their incomes, many have not been able to travel outside of the greater Sacramento area. There are several that use public transportation, walk, and/or ride a bike in order to get to school.
They have had different experiences in life that have challenged them on their educational journeys.
For varying reasons, many of our students have also attended multiple high schools and are super seniors (students needing more than the traditional four years to graduate high school.) Many are the first in their family to graduate from high school.
Despite the various challenges that our students face, they are determined to graduate. Due to their commitment and drive, they will earn their diplomas and go on to further their education being positive contributors to their communities.
My Project
The SAVA Women's Leadership class has an amazing opportunity to complete a Leadership Seminar at Disneyland. Our class objective is on becoming a leader, working on not only themselves and their futures but also knowing the importance of service within their community. This Leadership Seminar will complete a semester-long discovery of personal growth and what a leader looks like. Students will be challenged to discover their personal brand, develop core values, have the courage to step out of their comfort zones and understand the importance of diversity. They will also develop interpersonal communication and career skills.
Most of these incredible, resilient, motivated teens have never had the opportunity to leave Sacramento.
To make this a reality, we will be taking the long drive to Anaheim and back over a 3 day period. SAVA Women's Leadership would like to ask for support in funding part of the cost of their hotel stay.
