Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique two-way immersion program with the goal of fostering children’s development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish. I am thrilled to be part of this two-way immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak and listen in both Spanish and English as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards, including math and science.
We value our students and their families and stress the importance of building community and appreciating differences in culture.
My class is comprised of English Language Learners and students learning to speak Spanish for the first time. My students enjoy working together and helping each other become more proficient in their new language. I love seeing my students turn to each other and ask “Como se dice…” or “How do you say...” because that shows me they are building relationships and learning together!
My Project
I am requesting materials that will support and enhance the math portion of my classroom. My students are eager to learn from the moment they first walk into our classroom. The 3D shapes, attribute blocks, and Magna-Tiles that I am requesting will help make learning how to identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes in Spanish more hands-on for all my students. These materials will help set the foundation for my students to become experts in shapes and develop the skills they will need in First Grade. They can sort the attribute blocks based on shape, size, or color and feel the 3D shapes to help them better learn to identify the shapes and later be able to describe each one. Students will be able to feel each shape and its characteristics, rather than simply looking at a poster of each of the shapes. The pouches that I am requesting will help us keep our 3D shapes organized in sets that are ready to be used at any time, while the Magna-Tiles will help us to keep learning about shapes even during free-choice time.
I want all my students to gain a love for math and shapes!
My students could use all of these materials to learn in a hands-on and engaging way. Help me instill in my students a love for math and shapes through this project!
