Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd grade class is located in inner city Richmond, California, and all receive a free school lunch. Every year, the majority of students in all the classes I've taught start the school year substantially below grade level in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science concepts.
In addition to reading, writing, and math, the focus with my students include communication, leadership, cooperative learning, and technology.
I am constantly thinking of how to make technology work for us in order to get the students excited and become more efficient with learning.
My Project
My goal each year is to attack the achievement gap that exists in our school by creating new, exciting, and engaging ways to motivate learning. I currently use technology to handle 80% of the learning materials used in my class, including having books, assignments, and assessments I've created accessible online.
This project is to set up a recording center run by students to help kids who learn best using auditory materials and activities.
In the last couple years I have been videotaping my instruction to help visual learners in class, so my next step is to add this audio component to our class.
This would entail setting up a recording center where students and I can record materials and assignments. To do this we would like to get a Mackie 1402 mixer to run our microphones through to the Pro Tools recording software. This includes audio recording of instruction, read-alouds, song lyrics, student presentations, as well as science and social studies projects. Having the students learn how to use Pro Tools software, work the mixing board, and organize and run recording sessions for other students is an invaluable experience and an added plus!
