Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have chosen to follow the Marine Science Pathway at our school. All their classes are focused on the Marine Environment and working towards saving our planet. While they have many chances to observe a few small marine creatures in local aquariums and in the tide pools, but they also want to see larger marine mammals and more exotic creatures.
Each year we take the students to an offsite marine research facility to learn about careers in Marine Science.
Realizing that most of the students could not pay for the trip and that selling chocolate would take too much time, we wanted to look at donations and grants. Knowing about DonorsChoose.org, we realized they had found the way to get their trip funded!
My Project
My students need transportation to the University of California in San Diego, Scripps Aquarium and Sea World. We start the day at UCSD getting the college experience: dorms, classrooms, activities. Then we head to Scripps Aquarium to meet with scientists and scientist in training (university students). We also tour the facility, seeing one of the best collections of Sea Horses and Leafy Sea Dragons any where. Then, we get back on the bus to Sea World where my students know that some of the organisms we will see can only be seen at Sea World.
They want to see Walruses and Dolphins and Orcas!
While at Sea World, the students will participate is a group activity that will require teamwork and patience to dissect a squid. They will be required to analyze their findings and create a data table comparing each others squids.
At each site, my students will also learn about careers in science and animal husbandry and participate in feeding several of the animals and exploring the areas behind the scenes, such as the nursery.
