Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our amazing, diverse, hardworking students arrive at our public school with an open heart and mind. Most are considered English Language Learners/Academic English Learners and come from low-income families. Our community is multilingual and multicultural.
Despite the countless obstacles they face as urban Los Angeles students, I am certain that they will make a difference in our community, country, and world.
Our students are eager to learn. They defy all odds because they are not defined by the concrete and noisy streets that surround them.
My Project
Our classroom has taken on the challenge of maintaining our school's garden. Although our garden is somewhat small, it is thriving and has become a haven for butterflies, bees, and ladybugs. My students have realized that they can play a role in a healthy ecosystem.
We need additional materials to teach our students how to take care of nature and to grow plants that will attract wildlife in our school's garden.
Earlier in the year, our third grade class found monarch eggs and caterpillars in the garden. We successfully raised the caterpillars in our room. We were able to share this amazing experience with other classrooms. All students loved seeing the monarch butterflies released. We are anticipating additional caterpillars, but we are need of a new indoor cage. Our current cage has a hole that's patched up with duct tape.
We are also in the process of moving our succulents to other areas in our school. Thus, we need to fill the empty spaces with the additional 4 bags of soil and 18 various packets of seeds. The 12 sets of garden gloves will help us during this process. We tend to the garden every Friday and we often use disposable gloves. The garden gloves will help us cutdown on our waste.
Thank you for reading our project. We hope you can help our students to continue to develop their curiosity and appreciation for nature.
