"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." -Confucius
My students love science, and they especially love the hands-on experiments, projects, and dissection labs.
My favorite part of teaching is seeing their eyes light up when they make a discovery during a lab.
I teach 7th and 8th-grade science in a middle school in Missouri. My students are both energetic and inquisitive learners. They enjoy coming to school, researching new science concepts, and conducting hands-on experiments.
My Project
Our school’s gymnasium and auditorium are used for many extra curricular activities both during and outside of school hours. Our school has 600 students, and our gymnasium is filled with students exercising during the day and after school. Our campus houses many activities such as youth football, volleyball, basketball, cheer and cross country events during the weekends and evenings. Our auditorium is used for dance recitals, local plays, and graduations. We have many visitors in our building during these events, including parents, grandparents and community members. We currently have one AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in our building, but it is locked in the nurse’s office and not available for all of the extracurricular events that occur in our building outside of school hours. An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can potentially stop an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.
Adding an AED to our cafeteria area would be a vital tool in ensuring the safety of all of our students and community members.
Our cafeteria is in between the auditorium and gymnasium, so the AED would be easily accessible from both the gymnasium and auditorium. It's also close to an exit, so it’s accessible for outdoor activities such as football and cheer. In the event of an emergency, an AED can make a huge difference in a student’s prognosis. Placing a defibrillator in our cafeteria will provide an added peace of mind when faced with a time-critical cardiac event.
