The school is a military community along with a high poverty population. The students in my classroom struggle with feeling confident in their scientific abilities. It is very encouraging for the students to have successful visual and tactile experiences in science class to ensure their understanding of the standards and provide further motivation to continue learning. Many students do not have positive influences in their lives. Unfortunately, school is not always a priority for most of their families as they struggle to make ends meet one day at a time. Often the students are contributing to the household to help keep the family afloat. Students find my classroom to be a safe haven where they can express themselves and learn from each other. The students in my classroom take comfort in the class and begin to share my love of science. They feed off of the excitement that they encounter in the classroom.
Meaningful. Sustainable. Unforgettable. These are the words that describe what an international service tour means to my students. Students will have the opportunity to discover another country and in the process discover more about themselves. I am so excited to be able to offer this once in a lifetime trip to my students. Students will be able to see the science that we talk about in the real world! This trip will change their lives!
They will travel to the Dominican Republic to discover the wonders of marine life— and help preserve it.
They will work with local non-profits to better understand the needs of the community and then focus on those issues. They will be involved in environmental sustainability, responsible tourism and be immersed in culture and diversity.
