My students need dress-up clothes and home living props, floor puzzles and garages for their toy cars to enhance their pretend play and cooperative learning.
Play is the work of children. Dramatic play, puzzles and block play help children learn to problem solve, construct, role play, act out situations that interest, frighten or confuse them. My children need dress up clothes, floor puzzles and garages for their play cars to help learn these skills!
My student are a blend of typically developing and special needs preschoolers from a high poverty area.
Many of them are delayed developmentally and need extra support to learn and grow. Many of our families don't have the toys and learning materials in their homes that foster the development of children.
Our community suffered a huge disaster on May 22 with the EF tornado that ripped through the heart of Joplin. Play is also therapy for children and our children need opportunity to play, to construct, to pretend, to socialize, in order to process some of the things that have happened, not to mention just to grow as children and learners.
My Project
My students need to be able to pretend, to role play, to act out real and imagined situations in order to better process them. The dramatic play costumes will help them pretend to be the kind of grownups they want to be. As their teacher, I will facilitate their play to help them develop and grow in a constructive way. The puzzles and block area toys are so good for their fine motor, planning and cooperative social skills. Their may be budding builders, engineers or mathematicians in my classroom!
The children in my school district have been through a horrendous ordeal in the last 3 months.
In our schools, we want to give them a safe, positive, enriching environment so they can heal, learn and grow. The dress up clothes and puzzles and block area toys I would like are key parts to an enriching, developmentally appropriate preschool environment. Many of my students don't have toys at home and this is their only chance for enrichment before they start kindergarten.
