My Students

The 6th graders at our school are ecstatic to learn about Language Arts! They love to read so much they have trouble deciding which book to choose from on my bookshelf. After our library orientation, some of my students informed me that this had been "the best day ever" and that they "couldn't wait to start reading their new library book". My personal goal for them this year is to help all of them become better readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

Unfortunately, at least half or more of my student population comes from an economically impoverished area.

Their parents are unable to afford basic necessities like clothes let alone school supplies. Additionally, I have a significant number of ESOL students that struggle in Language Arts simply because of the language barrier. My ESOL students have to work harder to understand the material. For example, I have students that stay after school every week to receive remediation and build their vocabulary.

My Project

A class set of "The Red Kayak" will help my students foster a love of reading and help my students build stamina for reading longer texts! They will have the opportunity to connect with wonderful characters and make real-life connections. This novel is about choices and the consequences that go with them. In middle level, students have a lot of choices to make, such as: who to be friends with, what classes to take, what to wear, or how to behave in school, but mostly who to be friends with. The Red Kayak is a great coming of age story that will allow my students to better understand plot elements, characterization, types of conflicts, figurative language, making inferences and predictions, and many other reading standards that we focus on.
