Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The Kindergarten students in our classroom are so unique. Some are loud while others are quiet. Some are leaders, and others are followers. Some are little but act big; others are big but appear so timid. They come from neighborhoods never too far from one another, yet their backgrounds could not be more different. Many of my students come from low income homes, and, therefore, do not have the resources at home that allow for early exposure to literature. However, once they begin school that fire to learn is lit inside of them.
The one thing that unites everyone in our classroom is that we are curious, eager to learn and full of energy!
No matter where my students come from, once they arrive at school they bring a whole new life to my classroom. They work together, play together, learn from one another, sometimes argue but always problem solve, and grow as learners and people. When my twenty-six kids come together into one classroom, it truly creates quite the masterpiece.
My Project
I am looking for leveled readers to use during my guided reading lessons. Guided reading is an essential part of teaching students to read. It is when I get to observe their sounding out strategies, hear their fluency, and monitor their comprehension. However, book choice is SO important, and that is what my classroom is lacking right now. The engaging books you donate will lure my students into wanting to learn how to read which is half the struggle.
It is during guided reading that I watch my little five-year-old students transform into readers.
There is nothing more rewarding than watching the students come to Kindergarten knowing only 10 letters and sounds, but finishing the year at a first grade reading level. Watching a student beam with pride after reading their first book completely on their own reminds me why I became a teacher, and your donation could help you play a part in that!
