Ms. Howard from E Palo Alto CA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books at different levels, including the Henry & Mudge, Cam Jansen and Little Critter series, so they can read independently.

Imagine a room full of second graders completely engrossed in their books. After several minutes of independent reading, they move to sit with their reading buddies to read and discuss the various books. This is reading workshop and it happens every day in my classroom.
My second grade students are smart, kind, funny, and love learning.
Though my school has wonderfully passionate and caring staff members and families, it is often difficult to have enough books. Many families in my area struggle to make ends meet, and though they would love to buy more books for their kids, buying food and other essentials comes first. If I had more leveled books in my classroom, my students would have a variety of books to choose from to read in class and take home. Research shows that the more children read, the more successful they are at reading. These kids come from homes that desperately need more books, and this donation would help provide books in the classroom and in the home. It is amazing to watch children fall in love with reading, and they won't be able to do it without the necessary materials. Like too many children, my students struggle with incredibly difficult issues every day, but with these books, having enough reading materials won't be one of them.
Every day my students read for at least thirty minutes independently and fifteen minutes in pairs. This means they go through MANY books each week! I want my students to have enough books to keep them engaged and excited about reading. I have students at such varying levels of reading ability. Some are reading at a preschool level, while others are at a third grade level. I want all of my students to have enough reading material to keep them at the top of their reading game, and right now, I don't have enough books. We need such a range of books because with these, students are able to read on their own and I am able to teach each student at his or her individualized, independent level. These kids will be able to discuss books with each other, recommend books they read and loved, and read books to their kindergarten reading buddies. I have seen students fall in love with reading, and there is nothing better, but I can't do this without the necessary books.
My students do not have enough books to read at school or at home.
With these books, they would have engaging material to read in school, and these books could be brought home for nightly reading homework. Donations toward this project would have such a huge impact on these students' reading lives. They are such amazing kids, and they love reading so much. With new books that they are eager to read, I know my students' reading will grow and thrive!
