Mr. Haas from Brooklyn NY is requesting materials related to food, clothing & hygiene through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need deodorants, foot spray(s), body sprays and other assorted personal care items that they do not have to improve social and emotional wellness, as well as self-perception.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Coming from some of the toughest and financially strapped neighborhoods in NYC, our students do not often have the extra money when it comes to making purchases. On a regular basis, our students hear that they can not overcome where they live, and that this is just the life they will have. A good percentage of our student population reside in live-in shelters or foster homes and do not have regular access to basic hygiene products.
Rather than letting a divide happen in our school between those students who are fortunate enough to have these products, we would like to create a school-based pantry, that will be secret, but can be accessed on the needs of the students.
No student should be ashamed of coming to school, it is our job as educators to remove this barrier!
This project would provide a safe space for students to find the basic necessities they need for survival in their difficult environment. Our students should have these basic rights and with your help, inner-city adolescents will stay clean and won't go hungry.
The items would be kept in a discrete location and students can come to "Lillian's Pantry" on a case-by-case basis to obtain what they need for themselves and their families.
Every single item within this project will be used to fit the need of a student within our school. The deodorants, foot spray(s), body sprays and other assorted personal care items will be given to our students who do not have the financial freedom to make these purchases. Rather than letting our students be ashamed because they do not have the means to get something, we want to provide them with access to the materials they so desperately need. One of the most heartbreaking things to see is a student who doesn't understand, picking on a student because they do not have access to self-care products. It is our job as educators to remove this from our educational atmosphere and promote a learning environment for all.
