My extraordinary students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. In the small mountain town where we reside lies the intersection between many different cultures and histories. Many of our students' families have resided in the valley and surrounding high plains for generations. Many more students come from the many native indigenous tribes that are located in the region. There are also many Hispanic families, many that date back to the original Spanish land grants, and many more that have found a home here recently.
In our expeditionary learning environment, students from different cultures come together to create authentic projects in a real-world environment.
Along with useful objects, students also serve their learning community by building service projects that help benefit their fellow students and the larger community.
My Project
In the Escalante Middle School design studio, students design and build their own projects hands-on with hand and power tools. Many of our tools are still the original tools from the beginning of our woodshop over 30 years ago.
We are in desperate need of a new bandsaw to help students create the projects of their dreams.
At this point, we don't have a functioning band saw, while we wait for replacement parts. With your help, we can update this critical piece of machinery to move into the 21st century to teach students important skills for 21st century jobs.
Our students create a wide variety of high-interest projects for their community, school, and family. These projects teach them collaboration, communication, design skills, and fine-motor skills that they will need to navigate the 21st century employment landscape. Our workshop contains many of the tools necessary such as miter saws, lathes, table saws, scroll saws, laser engravers, CNC machines, and sanders, amongst other hand power tools, and hand tools. At this time we are missing a functioning band saw that will be crucial for nearly every project that students are working on.
