Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine not having basic resources like a printer and paper? For my students, this is an unfortunate reality. You can help my students produce something more important than test grades. You can help encourage self-study and research. You can help my students show what they know.
My students all live in an impoverished area where resources are scarce.
Many of them pass through some of the most dangerous areas of our city in order to reach the safety and comfort of our school. They are grateful that the school became a charter school four years ago. Before the charter conversion, the school was the most dangerous middle school in Pennsylvania. Now, without excluding any children in our community, we are among the best and safest. We are making large strides in all of our academic areas, but our work isn't finished. My students have a real desire to succeed and still need some basic resources to do so.
My Project
In my math classroom, the students are required to write and to do research. We have a working computer in my classroom, but no printer and a serious shortage of paper. My students will be able to print and share the results of independent research and project-based learning.
The production of these educational artifacts is of critical importance today as I prepare my students for life after school. Research and project-based learning help to answer the age-old question, "When will I ever have to use this?" Additionally, these types of classroom activities help to deepen knowledge, create connections, and solidify new learning.
We need to make sure that our children are prepared to participate in 21st century careers.
We can not teach only facts, we must encourage our students to think independently and strive to answer difficult questions. Donations to this project will provide the necessary tangible materials my students need to document their research and complete projects.
