How can we present the issues facing the environment to our school community in a way that will keep their attention? We need to create posters that are pleasing to the eye and educational!
I teach at a math and science high school in NYC.
The students of my school are so inquisitive and have such a drive to learn, something that is evident by their full schedules and packed after school activities. These are some of the best and brightest students but most have only been exposed to medicine or engineering or research as a possible career choice.
My Project
We are hoping with the Annual Earth Day Fair to inspire some of our students to think about what they can do to protect the planet, to consider the possibility of working towards a career in the environmental fields or at the very least to create a desire to make changes at home that will protect our planet.
In order to do this, we need these colored posters so we can create informational booths that the students will want to see and read. At the Earth Day Fair, we plan to have carnival-like booths set up around the cafeteria presenting topics ranging from Climate Change and Renewable Energy Sources to Urban Development and Green Architecture, as well as games that the students can play to win prizes. The more there is to see and learn about, the more students we are likely to inspire to help!
I know it doesn't seem like much, just some plain poster boards, but in the hands of my students and their imaginations, we will create presentations on topics of the greatest importance.
We hope they will have a lasting effect on their viewers, an impact that will be seen in their actions long after they leave the Fair.
