This year, I am very fortunate to have a yearbook staff full of hard-working and positive eighth graders. I taught many of these students in 7th grade last year, and they always showed amazing attention to detail, great attitudes, and a willingness to go the extra mile. Yearbook is not an easy class. It requires students to manage their time, meet firm deadlines, and collaborate to meet a shared goal.
Planning and designing the yearbook is an opportunity for our eighth grade students to capture the spirit and atmosphere of school.
They have been here for three years and know the ins and outs of the staff, the students, and the school's personality. I've taught yearbook five times before, but this is my first time back after a break from it and I'm excited to lead this group as they enthusiastically jump into investigative journalism. I know they will be successful, provided that they have the resources to do it.
My Project
This year, I'm inheriting a yearbook class that has limited supplies. The previous teacher did not raise funds, so our budget is in the red. We will need supplies to help us design an amazing book for our school.
Our goal is to make sure all 700+ students are in the yearbook three or more times.
The yearbook is a wonderful opportunity to recognize all students, not just a select few. I'd like our school spirit to be represented in a positive and uplifting way, and I'd like our students to look back on middle school fondly. I've taught yearbook five times before, and with hard work and determination, we always were able to get every student into the book multiple times. This helped ALL students, even the quiet ones, feel like they belonged. Middle school is a rough time for most kids, and it's important that they feel a part of our school.
In order to meet this goal, we need a functioning camera that takes high-quality photographs. I don't have any digital cameras to use this year, and I am relying solely on students' personal cameras. However, not all of my students have cell phones or cameras to use, so it is critical that I have at least one camera available to them. A high-quality camera will allow us to take excellent candids at sporting events and dances, take flattering photos of individual students, and practice professional photography techniques.
