I teach second and third grade literacy to two dynamic groups of learners in Washington state. The neighborhood represents a variety of cultures/families, all of whom are represented in our classrooms. We have students who speak multiple languages and who have varying levels of financial need.
Excitement is the name of the game in our classroom.
Whether we are learning about poetic forms, the life cycle of the Brassica plant, or how to read with grit, the students in my class are excited to soak up all they can.
My Project
March Book Madness is an event similar to the sports-themed March Madness with brackets of teams competing in a tournament; in March Book Madness, students at schools around the world hear, read, and vote on titles of children's books on a particular theme (this year's theme is "The Character's Journey"). At the end of March Book Madness, one book is revealed as the most popular book among the participants. Each round has books "matched up" against each other in one-on-one "games".
With a full set of the titles participating in this year's March Book Madness, students in our classes (and in classes across the school who wish to participate) will be able to read and discuss new literature with students and classes around the world.
It is especially important for me to expose students to books with diverse characters and authors; as this is always a focus of the creators of March Book Madness, they will be sure to read about characters representing a wide range of backgrounds and cultures. We hope to participate in the March Book Madness in the new year!
