Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As the only art teacher at my school, I want everything to be BEAUTIFUL! An elementary school should be a fun, creative, colorful, welcoming environment. Unfortunately, our school is lacking in that department. Most walls are barren and white. I've been working hard to make various posters, but I want something more permanent.

I will volunteer my time and effort to paint various murals around our school.

I want to paint rainbows and add COLOR to our school. Many of our kids view school as an escape from their home life. I want the walls to reflect that. I want it to be seen as a happy place.

I will do a fruit and vegetable mural in the cafeteria, a rainbow, and add positive affirmations in the bathrooms. That's just to begin. With these materials, the sky is the limit! These students will come into a school that is welcoming and colorful.

Murals can incorporate the ideas, sketches, values, and artistic contributions of students, staff, and neighborhood members throughout the various stages of the process. A mural can communicate what a school community values, appreciates, or wants to see for the future. Not only does the final product beautify and uplift the space, it gives a sense of ownership back to the students and stakeholders. A school willing to give students the chance to decorate their academic space with their own collaborative artistic rigor is a school nourishing positive community culture."
