Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am honored to teach a wonderful population of students. A majority of the students are English Language Learners (ELL), and my school serves as a host school for refugees coming from various places. I look forward to every day with my students, embracing the wonderful differences and experiences they each bring. I want my students to know they are valued, loved, and safe when they come into the classroom.
This year we are striving to offer our students the opportunity to be a part of a cheerleading squad, and compete.
Offering students the ability to participate in an extracurricular activity they would not have access to otherwise is so important. Sports and activities improve academic engagement, offer health and nutrition education, and encourage leadership. Many of the students at SES have never been part of a team before. Our cheerleaders learn that a team is dependent on everyone succeeding, to lead by example, and a strong work ethic.
To make all of this magic happen, our cheerleaders desperately need uniforms! This project will benefit students for years to come!
My Project
The students at SES are primarily from low-income families. Our students face adversity and food insecurity daily. Despite the problems they face, they are such hard-working and inspiring kids! We want to give them all of the opportunities that they deserve. Often, extracurricular team sports are just not possible for our students' families.
This project, one that will provide cheerleading uniforms complete with a bow, will enable 30 students the possibility to participate in a team they would otherwise not have access to, and to feel great doing it!
They will be able to represent their school at assemblies, performances, and competitions that require uniforms for participation. Participation in last year's team resulted in growth from so many students. We saw young people who barely spoke or smiled bloom into outgoing leaders in their classrooms. This project will truly help our students grow!
