Help Us On Our Adventures in the World of Reading!
My students need beginner level books that focus on phonics and sight words including Little Critter, Curious George, and Disney Princess phonics fun sets (among others).
"Books are...time machines, spaceships, story-makers, secret-keepers, dragon-tamers, dream-catchers, fact-finders and safe places." This rings very true in our classroom where an audible "awww" noise of disappointment is heard at the end of independent reading time.
Our first graders come from very diverse backgrounds and have a wide variety of needs.
They are a mix of English language learners and students with disabilities. The majority of children do not have access to books at home or families that are able to read to them. The time spent reading and being read to in our classroom is the only exposure some of our students have to the wonderful world of literature.
My Project
My amazing co-teacher and I followed our wonderful Kindergarten students to first grade! Unfortunately, we moved our fabulous first graders into a classroom with a second grade library. This means that we are lacking "just right" reading books that the children need to build their foundational reading skills such as sight word recognition, fluency and phonics. Our students get to "book shop" or select books of interest to read in school and they are also allowed to take a book home everyday so they can practice and share their books with their family. Because of the small number of outdated books we have available, we are in desperate need of new books so that children have a wide variety to choose from and take home.
By increasing the amount of early reader books in our classroom library, our students will be able to select books that interest them, not forced to pick through the few we have available.
The more books our students are able to read on their independent reading level, the more their reading skills will grow. A library filled with appropriate and interesting books will foster a love of reading in our students; benefits that will far outlast their time with us in first grade.
