Have you seen Hawai'i on a world map? We haven't either because it's always at the edge! Most maps break the world at the Pacific Ocean. This doesn't work well if you are located in the Pacific Ocean. Help us with a map that we can actually utilize to show our place in the world.
Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawai'i.
Many of my students have mild and moderate disabilities. We are in a high poverty area with many of the students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives, or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright, and many aspire to go to college.
My Project
In addition to science, I also teach social studies. We live in a rural area on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Yes - you can guess it is Hawai'i. Many of my students have never been anywhere else and it is difficult for them to visualize our place in the world. A world map that is Pacific centered will show our location clearly and let us explore the geography of our region. In addition, as we study our state, it would be helpful to have a nice big map that shows our islands.
My students have not had the opportunity to experience much of the world (yet!) I am hopeful that the ability to study geography and social studies and learn about other people and places will inspire them to create bigger dreams for themselves.
