My students need math manipulatives such as fraction cubes, liquid measure kits, and folding geometric shapes to help them better comprehend and apply math principles they will learn in 3rd grade.
Students only retain a portion of what they are told, but give them a chance to see and use hands-on activities and it is more likely the information will stick with them!
We are a public school system.
The student population K-5th is approximately 500 students. The students in my class are mostly middle class. They cover the scale - those who excel in math and those who have trouble wrapping their brains around the concepts. Some of the students have parents that help them at home with homework and some will have to get what they can at school.
My Project
The math manipulatives I am requesting will be a vital part of my math teaching. They will give those visual learners better understanding of the concepts. The items will also be used to reinforce concepts taught throughout the year - checking retention of the information. Students will also be able to apply math concepts to their everyday lives - which will give them a purpose for learning the material.
Our system has spent the last few years emphasizing reading and our test scores have shown improvement.
Now it is time to bring the same emphasis to math. Students love the variety of topics covered in math and are even more excited when there are manipulatives to work with as well.
