My students need wiggle chairs and flexible seating options around the room to help them manage their energy while trying to focus on classroom content and projects.
Welcome to my project! I teach in a large urban public school district where a majority of my 6th graders are economically disadvantaged. My students come to school eager to learn and engage in our content but often have difficulties staying focused in a classroom setting. During any given year, I will have multiple students who struggle with attention deficit disorder or simply have a difficult time staying focused on a task for extended periods of time. My students would benefit greatly from adding flexible seating options around the room. The added seating options would allow students a way to move while also staying focused on the classroom content at hand.
My Project
My 6th graders come to school bursting at the seams with energy. A challenge I have is trying to help my students manage their energy and wiggles while still having enough energy to focus on the content at hand.
Adding flexible seating and wiggle seat options to my classroom will allow my students to self assess their own need for movement and react accordingly without interrupting the class instruction.
Students will begin building and strengthening management skills that will impact their ability to be successful into adulthood. They will learn to self assess their own need for movement and learn to adjust based on that need. These real world management techniques are skills that most adults utilize without even knowing they are using it.
