I am starting in a new position at a school teaching Kindergarten through grade 5 music. We are an extremely large school of approximately 1200 students! This is a culturally diverse school with 60% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. They are eager children ready to learn!
Children love being able to play "their own" instrument and feel successful.
Having the opportunity to do so will incorporate aural, kinisthetic and visual learning together.
In many cases, the experiences we create for them at school could be their only exposure to said experiences. It is vital that we do our best to help them experience music in different ways!
My Project
There are only a few barred percussion instruments in the building to be shared between the other music teacher and myself. That is very difficult when the school is so large and we are teaching the same grade levels simultaneously. This grant is the first step in working towards my ultimate goal of purchasing an entire class set of glockenspiels, xylophones and metallophones. The glockenspiels purchased from this grant would allow me to be able to have students in all grades playing instruments; from steady beats, to rhythms and learning entire pieces. The ownership and sense of accomplishment students feel when they can sit at their own instrument and play is unparalleled. Also, when students are able to play their own instrument they become more engaged learners.
In addition to being used during class time, this grant would get me closer to the goal of starting a performing ensemble with 5th grade students.
Positive and successful music experiences for elementary students are so important. It is the foundation of a students encounter with music that will be lasting!
