Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember a time when you wanted something so badly but couldn't afford it so you had to put it back and walk away. How did that make you feel? Imagine how my students feel using old instruments that haven't been replaced in years.
My students are wonderful!
They are your average kids but struggle with families that are trying to make ends meet. Our school does not have much money so money is used on testing materials rather than extra-curricular items. We are a public school,as well as, an open enrollment school so we get students from all over the area. All students are on free or reduced lunch so most things are given to them without a cost behind it. We can't ask our students to rent instruments because they can barely afford food and clothing so my students have to use the instruments that are provided at the school.
My Project
With a drum set, I can introduce more music selections and teach my percussionists to multitask. It will also give my students a sense of what it is like in a professional band setting and keep them interested. The cymbals will bring so much life to the bands. Right now we are using one cymbal and trying to make it sound like the real thing so my students are not hearing what it really can sound like. The stand rack will make it a little easier to set up our auditorium since we are in the basement in the back of the school and the auditorium is in the front of the school.
As a teacher, I want my students to stay interested.
Right now they feel like they are not important because we don't have "nice" instruments. My students are starting to get bored because there is nothing new to hear. By bringing in new instruments, I am hoping they will stay interested and want to pursue music like I did.
