This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Study the science of art. Study the art of science" - Leonardo Da Vinci. Empowering students through art to learn engineering and mechanical design is the goal of our new Mechanical Arts Design Engineering (MADE) course. These books- written by an engineer but designed for artists- will help.
Our student body cuts across many socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds, including Title I and minority students.
Our students vary in achievement as well, with both "top-notch" kids that move on to four year and even Ivy league schools right after graduation. Other students struggle with grades and have to work after school to help support their families and need to feel that they have a future in the Arts and Sciences. Students at our school have a strong interest in the Arts and in Science with both an Arts Academy and a STEM academy to support them. Our student are very excited about our new Biology Engineering Arts Science Technology (BEAST) Program that is based on empowering students through the arts to apply anatomy to engineering and design by creating original machines using wood, aluminum and plastics via 3D printing that move and mimic life.
My Project
As part of a STEAM-curriculum we need these texts to both inspire our students and show them the principles of engineering they will need to design and build their kinetic artworks/machines. Recommended by our partner Visual Arts professors at the nearby State University, this text is unique in that it is written by a professor of engineering but designed for beginners and has an artistic approach to its presentation including lots of illustrations and diagrams including pictorials and instructions. This book will serve as a textbook for the artistry needed to bring the principles of biology to life. With them students will be able to study the concepts and techniques they need, and will push their own creativity by combining arts, science and engineering in truly innovative ways.
Using these textbooks, students from the Arts will gain an appreciation and interest in design and engineering, and students interested in science will have a chance to explore the creative and innovation of the Arts and crafts.
For many students, seeing this interconnection between the Arts and Science could open doors to new career paths they never considered, and give them the skills to achieve in college and career paths they might have never thought possible.
