This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Currently, I teach fifth grade in a high poverty urban public school.
My students live in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods that require support and resources for learning.
My classroom population is 90% minority with more than 50% being English language learners.
My students are beyond amazing! They come from a variety of countries that include Nigeria, Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Mexico. They work so hard to not only master the necessary fifth grade curriculum but also the English language. Many of them come from single family homes with hardworking families who are struggling to make it.
My Project
Have you ever gotten cabin fever where you are stuck inside because you are unable to go outside for fresh air, exercise, and vitamin D? Unfortunately for the students in my classroom, this is a problem during the winter months. I am trying to proactive and make sure I have many indoor recess activities for my antsy fifth graders.
Having these resources as optional indoor recess activities for my students, would mean more creative ways for them to work together, laugh together, and just simply have time being kids.
Many of my students are asking for new games or ways they can incorporate art and creativity into indoor recess time. Many of them are so used to having access to technology all of the time during their academic day, they would rather spend their time during indoor recess creating projects and playing games that promote teamwork.
