Mrs. McDonald from Adamsville AL is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a classroom greenhouse kit, a butterfly habitat with larvae, along with accessories, like a butterfly poster and seeds.

Inquisitive and creative are just a few words to describe my gifted and talented students. They crave challenging and exciting opportunities to learn, and they love to problem-solve. In my classroom, we work hard and have fun doing it. We believe that learning is exciting and a lifelong endeavor.
My gifted students have the ability to do amazing things, and the purpose of my class is to prepare them to change the world.
I truly believe that these students are our future, and they deserve every opportunity to be challenged and "grow their brains."
Our school has a young yet thriving school farm, and my gifted class wants to add a butterfly garden to the farm. They have learned about Monarch butterflies and the dangers facing them as well as how quickly the Monarch population is declining. This butterfly garden will allow my students to tackle a very real problem in our environment while also having a hands-on learning experience. They will be able to use the butterfly poster and display to learn more about butterflies native to this region and learn to identify butterflies. My students will use the butterfly habitat to raise caterpillars and watch them transform into butterflies, and then they will be able to release the butterflies into their butterfly garden.
These supplies will allow my students to be in charge of their own learning as they research, design, experiment, and plant a butterfly garden from scratch.
We will use the classroom greenhouse to grow plants from seeds in a protected environment where my students can observe their growth. The tools and pots will be used to help move these seeds from the greenhouse into the garden. They will learn about soil pH and use the pH meter to test the soil of their garden. The sunflower seeds will be planted in the garden by my students. All of these supplies will be crucial elements to our butterfly garden. It will become a truly immersive learning experience that brings real world issues and solutions into the classroom for my students.
This butterfly garden is a completely student-led project. They have researched the butterflies native to this area as well as the best plants to attract the butterflies and they have planned how and where to plant the garden and how to best attract the butterflies.
