My students need these 35 books to enrich our writing lessons. We use Lucy Calkin's Writer's Workshop to learn to write as authors do. These authors are wonderful examples!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Lucy Calkins writer's workshop teaches my students to be authors. My students will become better writers if they can have these published authors as examples. Lucy Calkins refers to these books throughout her lessons. These lessons would be easier for my students to learn if I had these books.
I teach first grade in a low income neighborhood in Illinois.
I have 29 bilingual students in my classroom. My students are very independent and want to be authors. Since my students are bilingual and we are learning to write in English, it is very important that they have as many visual representations of our lesson as possible.
My Project
During our writing time, I do a small mini lesson at the carpet and then the students spend the rest of the time at their seats writing their stories independently. I sit with a different table everyday and reinforce the mini lesson. I have so many students that it is very rare that I see every student every week. It is so important that the mini lesson gets through to them so they are able to work independently until I can work with each student. With the help of these books, my mini lessons can become stronger and easier for my students to see in the book what I want them to be able to do in their own stories. If I am able to use these books in my lessons, I will feel more confident about my students' level of comprehension and will be able to focus all of my attention on the students I am working with that day.
My students have a hard time thinking of themselves as authors.
They don't believe that they can one day become a published author. These books will help my students see that they can write just like Donald Crews, Angela Johnson, Vera B. Williams, Ezra Jack Keats, Don Freeman, and so many other wonderful authors do! My students will be able to see themselves using the same techniques that these published authors do, and will hopefully think of themselves as authors!
