Most come from low-income families where reading and other educational materials are luxury items.
Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and some have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. When you donate to our classroom, you are changing lives! Thank you!
My favorite books for those who are just learning to read are rhebus readers —stories that include pictures above or in place of the harder words. These were common when I was little, but are much more difficult to find these days. Well, I recently discovered that Scholastic has created a really nice set of science and social studies rhebus readers with over 20 titles! This set would be perfect for my kindergarten and first grade students!
The pictures would allow them to read about and explore many topics that would otherwise be inaccessible to them without help from a more advanced reader.
My little ones love to learn and would be thrilled to have these in our room! Please consider contributing to this project. Thank you!
