Each day when I walk into a classroom I am greeted by choruses of "Hi, Ms. Hammond!" I am a special education teacher in a city school district in New York where 100% of the students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. I work with students across 5 different grade levels, with various academic abilities ranging from PreK-3rd grade.
Despite their deficits, my students come to school each day excited and ready to learn.
They enjoy learning about math and science, and most of all they want to learn to read. As their teacher, I find myself tasked with helping to close the gap before sending them off to the next grade.
My Project
I work with 16 students in grades 1-5. These students are sweet and eager to learn. However, they struggle when it comes to reading. Most of my students are 2-3 grade levels behind where they should be when it comes to reading.
Students must be able to read in order to succeed in the classroom and ultimately in life.
These resources such as magnetic letters, pocket charts, and word isolators will help my students gain skills needed to enhance their experiences and ultimately become better readers. Students will use these to practice spelling words, practice identifying letter sounds, and use items such as a pocket chart to display the words they have learned.
