My students need a listening center equipped with an iPod docking station and several headphones.

"A good listener is not only popular everywhere, but after a while he gets to know something." -Wilson Mizner
My students are Kindergarteners at a school in a high poverty neighborhood in west Baltimore.
Of the 220 students that attend our school, 96% are eligible for free and reduced price lunch. There are 19 students in my class and every one of them are active learners and very curious. They love books and they enjoy being read to multiple times a day!
There are numerous benefits to having a listening center in our classroom. When children hear literature read aloud, it helps to build their vocabulary and comprehension skills. They also get to hear models of fluent and expressive reading which promotes good reading behaviors. Even more, it will provide an additional opportunity for my students to hear recordings of their favorite stories that we have read as a class (up to 6 students can listen at once!). Another plus: the listening center is equipped with an iPod docking station--this will allow me to quickly and easily download recordings of my students' favorite books on my iPod!
When you're 5 years old, being read to is among the most exciting and enjoyable experiences to have in school.
The listening center will provide this for my students when I am not able to read to them myself. Donations to this project will give my students what they deserve and will surely put a smile on their face when they realize they can listen to their favorite stories over and over again.
