My school is located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a Title 1 school in a low-income, urban community. Most students do not have necessary materials for school which makes school difficult for them. Many of my students are not even fortunate to have books at home. My students are wonderful kids that work hard in school but are faced with many challenges and obstacles both in and out of the classroom. Even with the support their families, students are not equipped with the proper materials to help enhance their education.
Many of my first graders have not even been exposed to an educational experience in pre-school or kindergarten.
This means having an abundance of books at their fingertips. This coupled with the lack of supplies and materials that other students have, puts my students at a disadvantage. As their teacher, it is my job to create an environment that can foster a love of learning and enhance their academic growth.
My Project
Reading is difficult to learn and when teachers don't have the necessary resources applicable for their students, reading becomes cumbersome and frustrating to the child. Students will learn to love reading because they will be able to read books that are on their reading level.
These leveled guided reading books will allow me to focus in and differentiate my small group instruction more specifically on what my students need.
I have many higher level guided reading books, but many of my students are not there yet and the lower level readers will help build their confidence in reading, while allowing me to teach the necessary skills to improve my students' overall academic abilities.
