Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Roses are red, Violets are blue, I love poetry, My students can too!

My students attend a wonderfully diverse community school.

We have a large special needs population, many English as a Second Language learners, and a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced school lunch, indicating an economic disadvantage. Despite of the challenges facing my school and students, we are proud to have improved test scores over the past few years.

My Project

Poetry can be very enjoyable, very complicated, or both- depending on your familiarity with the genre. My students need more access to poetry to be able to not only enjoy it, but to understand and analyze it, as well. Poetry lends itself well to critical thinking skills since there is often not one right answer to the questions. My students can then transfer these skills to other challenges. These books, written on different reading levels, will allow my students to read more poetry independently. We can also use them to learn to analyze and understand poetry in partners, small groups, or as a whole class.

My students are learning to love to read in my classroom library.

I have worked hard to provide my students books of all levels and interest areas. However, there is a noticeable lag in the poetry section. You can provide these children their first exposure to different types of poetry, and help them learn to love this genre!
