I teach 23 bright and beautiful children in a high need area of New York.
Most of my students are learning English as their second language, receive free or reduced lunch, and are so eager to learn every day. Unfortunately, my classroom does not always meet the needs of my very excited learners with regards to materials and supplies. Our wonderful, community oriented school does not have extra money for any supplies aside from the basics like pencils and paper.
My Project
Do you remember the fun that was recess? Most students claim it is their favorite part of the day. Unfortunately, due to our small school with only one side yard and the weather the kids do not always get to run around and play. They often spend their recess in a small dance studio with 75 other first grade students. I like to give the kids 10 to 15 minutes of extra play time at the end of the day in what I call afternoon center time. My students will use the Magna-tiles, blocks, and block play dolls during afternoon centers. They see it as extra play time. But really they are practicing sharing the toys and I walk around coaching them on their social skills. Social skills are crucial for students in the future and this time helps create a sense of community among the students.
These social centers will have a tremendous impact on my students' academic success.
