Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 22 students work hard. They recently shared our four computers to participate in The Hour of Code. They are motivated to do more and with iPads they could work with multiple learning apps that will support, strengthen and extend their achievement in exciting ways and take them into the future.
My first students live in a very busy urban area where surviving gets harder every day.
Their parents work hard to stay here. Most of my children are in after school care until six pm. Several struggle to make ends meet. Our school is 42 percent English learners. English learners need more time to use technology tools as they are acquiring English and need to practice hearing, reading and learning English. Our school has been forced to cut necessary and wonderful programs each year resulting in less art, computers, science, library, counseling, reading support and music. My students have learned a tremendous amount this year. They are kind and helpful. They love learning to read good books and gaining mastery over numbers. Their favorite activity is using computers to read, find out new information and solve learning based tasks. It's sad that we only get to use the school computer lab twice a month due to the bare bones budget we have had each year. They deserve more.
My Project
Reading, spelling, math and keyboarding apps, coding, drawing and painting will be augmented with an iPad. It will help students gain computer programming skills and use technology to grow and thrive. They will be able to research topics on the Internet to expand their knowledge and support our work on the Common Core. Students can use the iPad when their work is completed making better use of their time on task. They will be able to explore their artistic and creative sides with Brushes, the same app used by artists to create drawings and paintings. They will learn that computers can expand their knowledge and skills. Spelling, writing, keyboarding and math skills will be supported and students will grow intellectually.

I will have one more computer tool allowing five children at a time to use this wonderful learning tool. Most children in my class do not have exposure to the best learning apps. We will use them and children will gain new skills in language arts, math and more. We will use the Internet to expand on what we are learning from books and the public library app to help children access the free and wonderful materials available there. You can make this a reality!
