My Students

I am the luckiest teacher in 6th grade! My students are so incredibly smart and special. Even through a pandemic, they are hungry to learn and are always so positive.

My goal when teaching math and science is to make my classroom a safe place to learn for every student.

With everything they might be experiencing at home and in the world, I work hard to make my classroom the place they can feel safe to learn and truly be themselves.

Our school is in a rural, small town with most of the students knowing a hard days work living on their farm. Their work ethic and kindness towards each other impresses me every day. We learn in what's called a Modern Classroom, which enables the students to use technology and each other to learn at their own pace and take more responsibility for their learning. In adopting this self-paced flow, it allows the students to make their own goals, to collaborate with each other, and reach their potential. I also get the opportunity to work more closely with them one-on-one and in small groups to tailor to what helps them learn.

My Project

The use of whiteboards, scratch paper, or boogie boards is essential for my students, especially with math. Being able to use a digital version of a notepad will enable the students to save and submit their notes/math work so much more easier. Also, when they are quarantined and have to learn from home, all of the things they have worked on in class will be saved in their drive or on canvas from using a digital drawing board in class.

Our classroom is designed for each student to work and learn at their own pace and take more responsibility of their own learning.

Have adequate storage space and their own cubbies is essential for this. When they are ready for math activities or science labs, they will be able to find those materials clearly labeled on the shelves instead of in boxes on the floor like they are now. Also, their personal items are not stored well and I want them to be able to keep their materials in a space that belongs to them and stays separate from everyone else. The cubbies they have now are too small and are falling apart, making it difficult for the students to find their things. The students are so much more eager to learn and be in class if they have a space that is just theirs in the classroom.

My students have been so resilient and are so uplifting, but these items would benefit them so much when they are learning in the classroom, but also when they are learning at home.
